HIRING PROCESS

The Lake Charles Police Department practices a structured and rigorous selection process for the purpose of employing the most qualified, motivated and honest professionals available. Upon successfully meeting each of the requirements listed below, department candidates are selected for probational appointment to attend a Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy.



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a Citizen of the United States
  • Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid Louisiana Drivers License
  • Pass a Physical Agility Test

ADVANCED REQUIREMENTS

  • Pass an oral board interview 
  • Pass a psychological examination 
  • Pass the State Civil Service exam 
  • Pass a polygraph examination 
  • Pass a background investigation including character and previous job history
  • Pass a physical examination, including a drug screen  


Conditional offer of employment upon successful completion of all phases 

BENEFITS AND SALARY

In addition to the $6000 hiring incentive, Lake Charles Police Officers are paid bi-weekly and can expect to receive a beginning wage of $18.63 an hour, equivalent to $3619.20 monthly or $43,440 annually.  These figures do not include built in four-hour short day overtime every pay period or other overtime worked by the officer.  In addition, officers who are POST-Certified receive $500.00 per month supplemental pay or $6,000.00 annually for their first year of service. Qualifying officers may also receive an additional educational supplement of $100.00 per month for a bachelor’s degree from an Accredited University.  The city has also instituted a three-year pay plan that will increase police pay 9% over the first 3 years.  Following the first year of employment, there is a guaranteed scheduled 2% annual longevity pay increase every year, for 25 years.
